Every Castle Arts Gold set includes a fold-out tutorial, guiding you through the colors and techniques used to create the ten images that make up the Gold Range tutorial frieze. The 36-page guide teaches you how to care for your pencils, from sharpening methods to holding techniques, as well as explaining the color pencil range, light and form, pencil pressures and strokes, blending, layering, and texturing.

Castle Arts Gold colored pencils are fairly translucent, making them wonderful for layering and well-suited for greyscaling. They adhere to many hard surfaces, such as wood, stone, leather, and metal, and are permanent, though we recommend sealing your drawing with a coat or two of varnish.

These oil-based pencils are easy to blend, with the smooth oil base allowing color to move onto the paper from the edges of a test patch when using a colorless blender or stump. Smooth cartridge paper is our favorite surface, but they also work well on watercolor paper, with its pleasing little texture for the pencil to "bite" into.
